Managing Quality In Architecture

Knowledge is the highest level of understanding that can be commonly held; wisdom exists only in the human brain, e.g. is personal and unique to the holder. When the holder of wisdom imparts it to others, it is received as knowledge. We do speak of ‘collective wisdom’; I would argue that that idea refers to a group of wise people acting on a common issue. This view of the relationship of information to knowledge is fundamental to the organization of this handbook and the documents that support it. The initial contributions of authorities in various aspects of managing quality, and case studies of practices, together with paths running out to an extensive collection of related, web-based resources, create a rich tapestry of relevant, valuable information.

The Codes Guidebook For Interiors

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
Codes, standards, and federal regulations are an essential part of designing building interiors. Whether you are space planning the interior of a new building or making some minor changes in an existing building, all of these must be taken into consideration. They should become a natural part of every project you design.
The Codes Guidebook for Interiors is designed to help you as the designer. If you are a design professional, such as an architect, an interior designer, or an engineer, you must know the code. Most of the code publications deal with an entire building— exterior and interior as well as the structure of the building itself. This book concentrates on the codes that pertain to the interior of a building, helping you to minimize your research time. It will make the many interior codes, standards, and federal regulations user-friendly.

Lighting Modern Buildings

On the completion of a work of this nature, where help has been received from so many quarters, it is impossible to recognize the many architects and lighting designers individually who have contributed to the book. The Case Studies must speak for themselves, and the architects and lighting designers responsible are acknowledged, but particular thanks must go to those practices who have co-operated so generously in providing the photographs and drawings which illustrate these projects. The most difficult part of writing a book where illustrations play so vital a part, is persuading designers to spend the necessary time in seeking out schemes which they may have completed many years before. Having said this, there are several people who have been generous with their time, in reading and correcting the early theoretical chapters. I must mention Prof James Bell who helped with the chapter on Daylighting; Tony Willoughby and John Howard who have eliminated many of the mistakes I would otherwise have made on artificial lighting; and finally David Loe, and Kit Cuttle from Rensselaer who have helped to clarify my thoughts on the analysis of the ‘architectural problem’, and my approach to ‘seeing and perception’. Many thanks to all those who have helped in one way or another to get this book printed.

Jail Design Guide

New jail construction is a major capital undertaking, which often represents the single largest project in which county officials will ever be involved. Many local jurisdictions are replacing outdated facilities as well as expanding bedspace to accommodate increasing numbers of inmates. The U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics reports the capacity of the nation's jails increased by approximately 20,000 beds during the year ending June 30, 1997 To respond to local jurisdictions' need for assistance in jail planning and design, the National Institute of Corrections offers a Facility Development Program that provides guidance as they proceed with jail planning, design, construction, and transition. This document supports the Facility Development Program by providing information about basic concepts and issues surrounding jail design.

Lighting By Design

This book is concerned with devising electric lighting installations for architectural spaces that will contribute towards achieving architectural design objectives. It is written for architects, interior designers and specialist lighting designers. It presumes a basic knowledge of lighting technology, although a brief summary is given in the Appendices for the benefit of those who might need an occasional reminder. The book comprises three parts. Part One is titled ‘Observation’, and the thesis is that the aspects of lighting that concern a designer are those that can be seen to make a difference. The problem is that we all take lighting for granted, and we simply do not notice what lighting can do until we direct ourselves to look for it. If people enjoy the visual experience of a space or the objects it contains, the lighting must have been working well for them. That they remember the architecture or the beautiful art, and they don’t remember the first thing about the lighting, is not the issue. To become a lighting designer it is necessary to understand the role of lighting in revealing that experience. This is done by objectively examining interactions of light and matter and developing an extensive range of observation-based experience of lighting. Part Two is titled ‘Visualization’. A lighting design concept.

Introduction To Architectural Science - The Basis Of Sustainable Design

Four chainsof thought led to the idea of thisbook and to the definition of itscontent:
1. It can no longer be disputed that the resources of this earth are finite, that itscapacity to absorb our wastesislimited, that if we (as a species) want to survive, we can’t continue our ruthless exploitation of the environment. Where our actionswould affect the environment, wemust act in a sustainable manner. There are many good books that deal with the need for sustainability (e.g. Vale and Vale, 1991; Farmer, 1999; Roaf et al., 2001; Smith, 2001; Beggs, 2002). This book assumes that the reader is in agreement with these tenets and needs no further persuasion.
2. Architecture is the art and science of building. There exists a large literature on architecture asan art, on the cultural and social significance of architecture – there is no need for
discussing these issues here.
3. The term ‘bioclimatic architecture’ wascoined byVictor Olgyay in the early 1950sand fully explained in hisbook ‘Design with climate’ (1963). He synthesised elements of human physiology,
climatology and building physics, with a strong advocacy of architectural regionalism and of designing in sympathy with the environment. In many wayshe can be considered as an important progenitor of what we now call ‘sustainable architecture’.
4. Architecture, as a profession is instrumental in huge investments of money and resources. Our professional responsibility is great, not only to our clientsand to society, but also for sustainable development. Many excellent books and other publications deal with sustainable development in qualitative terms. However, professional responsibility demands expertise and competence. It isthisnarr ow area where thiswork intends to supplement the existing literature.

Illusionism In Architecture

Sensing and seeing are not automatic processes but depend on cognitive processes that have been studied by scientists since the time of Descartes. Vision, the most essential sense possessed by artists and architects, is vital to turn conceptual forms into reality, or as Marleau- Ponty suggests ‘vision is the brain’s way of touching’. [ 1 ] ‘It is physically accomplished by stimulating the retina of the eye with elements of light, color, intensity and direction, combined with cognitive analysis of
the sensory information. Along with elements of our own knowledge, background, and experiences, vision aids our understanding of our environment. [ 2 , 3 ] Massey refers to Descartes and his work ‘Discourse’ : “The sense of sight gives no less assurance of the reality of its objects than do the senses of smell and hearing, while neither our imagination nor our senses could ever assure us of anything without the intervention of our intellect

How Buildings Work - The Natural Order Of Architecture

Over the past quarter century, the practice of building has undergone significant changes in several areas, notably mechanical, electrical, and communications systems. Researchers have added to our knowledge of building function. New areas of social concern have \emerged, especially for buildings that are accessible by all, and for building in a sustainable manner. This third edition, in the tradition of its predecessors, sticks to the basics, but includes hundreds of changes both large and small that reflect the current state of the art and science of building. I have retained the basic organization of the original volume, along with its look and feel, all of which have worn well. The mission and premise of the book remain unchanged. Historical Dictionary Of Architecture

Architecture is unquestionably one of the arts, and certainly not a lesser one, but dealing with it purely as an art would be very incomplete. For, more than other arts, it depends heavily on technology as concerns materials used, construction techniques, and new technological possibilities in other fields. There is also a commercial aspect, as cost matters in many—if not quite all—cases. Meanwhile, broader trends in society and politics impinge on just what will be built, while aesthetic currents and even fads determine what style will be adopted. Thus a multifaceted approach is essential, one that is applied here and makes this historical dictionary particularly useful. This being said, it starts at the beginning, with Ancient Egyptian, Near Eastern, Greek and Roman architecture, and others, does not forget the middle with the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo, and again others, and goes right up to Post- Modernist and High-Tech architecture and, yet again, others. While much of the coverage is “western,” other areas are not forgotten, such as China, India, Japan, or Mesoamerica and, for the last time, others. So it covers all the historical periods from the oldest to the most recent and all the major regions of the world. Download In PDF Format More Details Below.

Integrated Buildings - The Systems Basis Of Architecture

The idea for this book originated at the University of Houston, Gerald D.Hines College of Architecture. Our technology faculty met in the spring of 1986 to discuss course revisions and curriculum coordination. The pressing needs we saw at that time were twofold. First, our research methods class needed to be reconfigured. Second, we wanted to provide more opportunities for students to assimilate technology course topics in the studio setting. We settled on a new textbook, The Building Systems Integration Handbook (Rush, et al., 1986), as the solution to both problems.
